To the Members of Parliament of Aotearoa New Zealand
We, the undersigned, call on Members of Parliament to support a platform-responsibility approach to online safety, as set out in the Online Safety (Duties for Providers of Internet-Based Services) Bill.
Online harm is a real safety issue in Aotearoa New Zealand. Young women, girls, gender-diverse people, and marginalised communities are disproportionately affected by harassment, abuse, and harmful online content.
Too often, responsibility for managing online harm falls on individuals after harm has already occurred. We believe online service providers should be expected to take greater responsibility for preventing harm, including through safer design, clearer expectations, and greater transparency.
We ask Members of Parliament to support and advance a safety-by-design approach to online safety, including by advocating for the principles and duties in the Online Safety (Duties for Providers of Internet-Based Services) Bill to be brought before Parliament, debated, and considered through the legislative process.
