AGNES MONCRIEFF - OUR SECRETARY IN CHINA

Barbara Francis is writing a book for the Wellington YWCA about Agnes (Nessie) Moncrieff.

Agnes Moncrieff was an International Secretary of the YWCA of New Zealand based in China from 1930-1945. This meant she was funded by the YWCA of NZ, but was a member of the staff of the YWCA of China and responsible to their controlling Board. Other countries such as USA, Canada and Britain also funded International Secretaries in China at this time. Agnes Moncrieff is the only New Zealander to have held this position

Prior to going to China, Agnes spent almost a year with the YWCA of Dunedin. At the end of each of her 5 years of service she returned home to NZ on furlough and visited all the local associations where she proved ‘by her masterly and vivid speeches a most effective emissary on behalf of China’. She was frequently referred to as ‘Our Secretary in China.’ Her second furlough in 1936 was extended so she could for 6 months replace the YWCA of Christchurch’s Secretary who was on leave.

During these 15 years many letters were written by Agnes. In 2002 many of the letters were deposited in the in the Alexander Turnbull Library, Wellington, where they are now archived as the Agnes Moncrieff Collection.
