Rotorua YWCA HerStory
The YWCA of Rotorua was established in 1961 with a public meeting called by the National Council of Women with the prime objective of building a Hostel for young women in Rotorua. An investigation committee was formed to look into the need for a hostel and find a possible site.
The YWCA of Rotorua was incorporated under the Incorporated Societies Act (1908) on the 8th day of June 1966.
Members worked tirelessly raising money for the hostel. The Hostel was completed in 1973.
Over the years the Y has run a number of activties. In the early sixties the Y introduced the Blue Trainagle Club, a womens basketball team, assisted the Prisoners Aid and Rehabiliatation Society and actively assisted the National Council of Women and Gymnastic Classes.
In 1972 our Y's Buys nearly new shop was opened in Bryce's building in Haupapa Street. The Shop was run by Volunteers and because of their success were able to fund the Hostel extension which included an Administration Office, a small flat and the Activity Room. In 2003 the volunteers reported a decline in sales and a decsion was made to close the shop.
Many of our current activities have been running since the late 70's.
