Hamilton 'Y' women attend asia pacific meeting

A week long Asia Pacific YWCA Regional Training Institute has been held in Bali aimed to enhance the capacity of YWCAs, to strengthen the response to HIV and AIDS and sexual and reproductive health and rights, and violence against women in the Asia and Pacific region.

The YWCA Asia Pacific Regional Training Institute gathers every four years to help develop future leaders. New Zealand was represented by Rachel Bowley, Nan Seuffertt (both from Hamilton), Vanisa Dhiru (Wellington), and Hilary Sumpter; they were part of 90 women and young women from Asia and around the Pacific.

The young leaders looked at ways of building confidence and self-esteem in young women. They discussed the importance of education about sexual and reproductive health and rights and violence against women; sex is often taboo subject in the Pacific and the lack of information for young people contributes to the existing stigma and discrimination towards people living with HIV.

Hamilton YWCA  holds a week long 'Week Without Violence Campaign' each November and supports the World AIDS Day each December.
